More about the project

The project E-dictionary Database of Medieval Bohemisms will be carried out in two phases, each with its own objectives and measurable outcomes. In the first phase (2 years), a machine-readable corpus will be created and all hitherto unpublished texts of Old Croatian translations from Old Czech will be transcribed (Homiliary on the Gospel of Matthew (175 folios), Transitus of St Jerome (2 folios), the Quadragesimale from the Petrinić Miscellany (approx. 80 folios), and St Bonaventure’s Treatise from the Petris Miscellany (approx. 10 folios)). Special attention will be devoted to the Homiliary on the Gospel of Matthew, for which a Czech text will be prepared in parallel, and a detailed transliteration of the Croatian text will be produced and prepared for publication as a scholarly monograph. Textual, translational, and linguistic comparison with the Czech text, as well as contextualisation within early vernacular Bible translations, will result in a study to be included in the printed edition of the Croatian Homiliary. The outcome of this phase will be a scholarly monograph prepared for the publication of the Homiliary text. After completing the transcriptions/transliterations of all previously unprocessed translations and compiling a machine-readable corpus—including OCR processing of the already published Old Croatian translations from Old Czech—the project will proceed to the creation of the dictionary database of medieval Bohemisms. This phase will involve the lexicographic processing of lexical influences from the Czech language, including the identification of Czech lexical models and examples from Croatian and Czech texts in which they occur.
